when the ice is about below 3 cm solid you should consider to get back on dry land if it doesnt bend and you get theese nice star atfer your footprints . OR if the ice is corny or like full of holes (kinda like with air in it). When you get stars when you walk on it you probably should go back to but in some cases a nice ice floating "device" can work well and you drag your self out on it.
