Was just wondering what English name you prefer to use for Leuciscus idus, ide or orfe? And if you can tell me if one of them is considered more regional or old fashioned?

Most common id in England is the golden Orfe, there stocked in garden ponds and commercial fisheries, and there are pockets of these in the wild. There a cross between a goldfish (carp) and id. And is referred to as an Orfe or golden Orfe.
The id we have in central Europe and Sweden, the id we all know is referred to as ide in English. There not native, but there have been reports of captures. And are being imported,
To summarise then wild fish are Ide, and the ornamental cross breed verity are golden Orfe. But if unfamiliar with Ide and you caught one in the UK, you would more than likely identify it by its Latin name; and both Ide and Orfe as a common name would be appropriate I imagine though out the country regardless of region.
With regards to old fashioned names, I would guess Orfe to be older and more widely used, but that’s just a guess!

WM Wilkinson mentions ide in his book Days in Falkenberg which he wrote in 1886.
If he anglofied the swedish id, or if orfe is an older word, I have no idea.Kommentera
