Ice Advice!!

Need some ice advice!! I was out today and it was really scary, talking, jumping up off the haglöfs combi and running for dry land!! the ice was cracking and sounding like hell on earth, can this extream adjusting make it dangerous or is it on the contrary, in fact making it stronger? Also has this mild spell made it unsafe, I had about 10cm thick, but there were some old borr holes that were getting bigger

Ofta kan isen knaka när den växer till, men om den som du säger smälter i borrhålen då låter den inte så säker. Du måste alltid provborra och kolla hur isen är, är den hård och fast är det lugnt, är den svampig och vattnig så är det inte bra läge.

Isen kan även knaka om vattenståndet varit högre men sjunkit undan, då sjunker även isen sakta med ett djävla liv... tills den lagt sig på vattnet igen.

Om det finns öppet vatten och du känner att isen rör sig flera centimeter då kan det vara ett tecken på att isen håller på att spricka upp, men som sagt, var alltid uppmärksam på isens tjocklek och hårdhet.

Shit det kan jag verkligen inte göra, då hade jag aldrig kommit ut alls..

Fiskade förra vintern uppåt arvika till, vi trippade väldigt försiktigt, livrädda för isen, men skotrarna dundrade förbi hela tiden.. :)
Man måste nog vara uppvuxen där man är van vid is på sjöarna för att ha nån magkänsla..

The ice was stenhård, nothing like the spring time ice, but it sounded horrendous, really shit you up kind of noise, brutal in fact. I imagined a section braking free between the peppering of borr holes and me sliding in, or the ice close to the old holes worn away and dangerous. I’d Never heard it crack like that before, but I think the fact know one else was out fishing and my lack of experience made a 100 times worse, it’s a popular spot and I had expected to find others fishing. Only mad dogs & English go out in the midday sun sprang to mind!! :)

I’m never really at ease on ice, whether alone or with others; it leaves me on edge, unless the ice has covering of snow then it’s psychologically different somehow.

It’s nearly 5 minus and clear skies outside just now, I hope to have a few hours out in the morning, hopefully it will have settled down.

Vid väderomslag kan isen låta förjävligt otäckt ,var ute idag den lät i stort sett hela tiden
så fisket var kasst.Ska ut imorrn igen då bör den ha lugnat sig .Starksprickor brukar inta vara farligt men som sagt man vet aldrig så ha dubbarna med .

10 cm is vid den här årstiden är lugnt. Har ni dessutom minus nu så är isen kanon imorgon. Men det är aldrig fel att vara extra försiktig om man är ute själv.
Jag är riktigt avundsjuk, här finns ingen gångbar is alls.

Har ni inga bra isar alls?? Här på sjöarna har vi ca 15cm stenhård is...känns ganska mysko att gå på när dom är så klara. Man kanske skulle fiska lite på dom oxå istället för att bara åka skridskor med kidsen..

Näe, vi hade 7-8 på Näshultasjön innan jul, men den är inte gångbar nu.

Hi Shanghai,
I'd say you needn't have worried at all.
This time of year you have core ice all the way through - not at all like the rotten ice you get in the spring time or the mixed ice with layers of core ice and frosen sludge you get later in the season. I have never ever heard of cracks causing the ice to break into sections because of bore holes - couldn't happen (IMHO), especially not if you have got as much as 10cm of core ice.

I routinely (I am VERY careful..) fish (core) ice as thin as 4-6cm without problems (beiing not far shy of 200 pounds ;-).

This said - you will need to be VERY CAREFUL and aware of the dangers of ice fishing... Always check the thickness of the ice (do it often if the ice is thin) while moving, always wear "isdubbar" and carry a safety line AND above all stay alert about the danger points on the ice:

vass, råk, brygga, bro, udde, avlopp, utlopp, inlopp, sund, grund och vindbrunn (I beleive I have seen you write stuff in Swedish I won't translate this because I'm lazy and drunk right now...)

Haha where are u from mate? Don't worry btw ;) when the ice is about below 3 cm solid you should consider to get back on dry land if it doesnt bend and you get theese nice star atfer your footprints ;). OR if the ice is corny or like full of holes (kinda like with air in it). When you get stars when you walk on it you probably should go back to ;) but in some cases a nice ice floating "device" can work well and you drag your self out on it.
